CEO's Update

WATCH: AuScope is Australia’s provider of research infrastructure to the Earth and Geospatial Science community. Our tools, data, services and analytics enable scientists to understand Earth’s evolution through deep and human time. In this video, discover our highlights from 2021 as we took the first steps to deliver our 10-Year Strategy (2020 – 2030). Video: AuScope

As another disruptive year draws to a close, I am very proud of all that our AuScope community has achieved in both research, and communicating the value of geoscience. We have even discovered some cinematographers in our midst! I want to take the opportunity to congratulate and thank you all for your collective efforts and to describe for you a few of the highlights from the last quarter.

Let’s start with the Exposure Draft of the 2021 NRI Roadmap. This document underpins future investment decisions impacting our capacity to undertake research over the next decade. Overall the Roadmap looks good, and we commend the Expert Working Group for putting together a comprehensive, Challenge Framework-based approach to future investment.

There are, however, some gaps for geoscience, and AuScope has prepared a submission outlining these. We would encourage you to make a submission via the NRI Roadmap website (the more voices, the better), and we are happy to share our comments with you to help formulate a response if you wish and I will forward the document to you:

No doubt you will be keen to relax over the holiday period, at the beach or in the backyard, and watch some AuScope videos! Fortunately, we have you covered. During Earth Science Week, we released a fabulous mini-documentary on Australia’s Downward Looking Telescope featuring a number of our researchers discussing what makes them tick and why the DLT is so important for the future.

WATCH: Science evolves from the capacity to see and think differently. AuScope’s Downward Looking Telescope (DLT) is our vision for a futureproof research infrastructure system that will allow researchers to ‘see’ into Earth and capture, focus and analyse data to help us think deeply about Australia’s future. Here we explain each DLT Component and what they mean for Australia’s research community. Video: AuScope

We also released an AuScope Highlights 2021 video, where I speak about much of the activity across our projects in the last year.

Finally, for those that may have missed it, we ran the first AuScope Research Conference in October. This virtual event attracted 150 geoscientists across two days of content delivery and engagement, 60 10-minute length science talks, and two keynote presentations on aligning geoscience with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the role of trust in doing geoscience respectfully. Once again, the pre-recorded presentations all remain available for your holiday viewing! This event was a fantastic success, and I thank all involved and congratulate our prize-winning presenters:

I hope you all have a very happy holiday period and enjoy some well-deserved R&R. We all look forward to working closely with you next year as we begin to develop investment plans aligned with the NRI Roadmap.

Warm regards, Tim Rawling
